Nishank & Angana
Why is this the first photo?
I never thought something as simple as a cutting board in a kitchen could show intimacy of a relationship. The story here is that Angana was trying to cut sushi, and she wasn’t able to get hold of the sushi and cut it as neatly as she’d like it. Until this moment, we were only shooting “cutting” as a shot of “action”, and then Nishank slips his arm from behind her, holds the sushi for Angana from the other end so it becomes slightly easier - and suddenly, a photograph of a simple action became a photograph of intimacy.
Its these little things that matter. Love as grand gestures is something we all do - what “love” comes down to at the end of everything is in the smaller moment of how two people simply live together.
Nishank & Angana are vastly different from each other. The beauty of being in their presence was witnessing how these two different people live with each other, how all the difference they are becomes something more meaningful in their life together.
She speaks in metaphors, he listens in language—yet neither writes for rhyme. Together, they search not for poetry, but for possibility.
That’s the first thing I wrote in my notes after our first phone call with them.
They also said something else on that call:
For us, the next milestone in our relationship is perhaps that we want to be known as one single entity from being two different individuals.
So, their entire experience was designed around one question: What are the different ways two people can come together as “one”?
